Good Hunting Is Possible and Bad Pheasant Hunts Guaranteed

Two Kansas Hunting Styles

One hunter with one dog quietly walks through a field on a meandering track. Four points or flushes occur, four shots fired, for roosters in the bag.

Several hunters walking through a field in an unwavering line and direction flush many pheasants. Several shots fired at roosters in and out of range. Amongst them all is a limit for one at the end of the field.

No convoys of hunting vehicles, mixing of dogs with others, no gang or drive hunts. Kansas hunting for the enjoyment of the dog and the day.

Not all will have a good hunt.

Many come with preconceptions of how the hunting should be rather than what is reality.

To have bad Kansas pheasant hunting is guaranteed if believing that every dog and any one hunter has the ability to effectively hunt wild pheasants. Just as every hunter will not have the willingness to walk, observation skills to capture pheasant behavior or shooting ability neither does every dog have good pheasant skills. The difference is not that neither hunter will bag a pheasant or a limit. The difference is between which will have the good hunt regardless of the number of pheasants bagged.

We will have hunters that will see many bag limits in a day and to bag but a few. And, we will have hunters that will not see many birds. The issue is not the Kansas habitat or the presence of pheasants for bad hunting. Bad hunting has other factors that stop those pheasant from reaching the bag. It is those factors the soon to be successful pheasant hunter learns and adjusts.

Kansas Self Guided Wild Pheasant Hunts

Self guided Kansas wild pheasant hunts only with consequence. The toughest hunting there is for those from non native pheasant states. The worst hunts will be the first hunting trips. The hunting will get better with experience for those with the will power and self determination to learn.

The first hunts are the worst simply due to that hunter never having hunted that Kansas particular land, protective cover or food source habitat before. It is unreasonable for any to think their dog will point or flush in range pheasants in a Kansas cut milo field if never having hunted wild pheasants in a cut milo field before. This is a simple illustration to make the one point is that the better hunting is to come.

Most after having hunted Kansas common crops of cut wheat, milo and corn crop fields, or tall native grasslands, or the brush filled draws will find any one particular hunting dog more suited to one Kansas cover over the other. The extremes of which are only the most refined hunting dogs do well in cut wheat. Most dogs hunt well in native grass. The obstacle to this understanding is the hunter. That is the hunter that believes his dog should be a good pheasant dog under all conditions will have the most dissatisfying Kansas hunting experience.

Kansas Pheasant Hunting With and Without Dogs

Kansas wild pheasant self guided hunting does not require hunting dogs or any dog for that matter. We have occasional hunters in the field with non-standard dog breeds as well as father and son no dog teams bagging limits.

Pheasants may be walked up by a solitary hunter. A good pheasant dog will always make any wild bird hunting all the better. We agree. It is also those with dogs that spend the most time hunting.

In terms of the Kansas popular pheasant cover type of the tall grass it is here many of these non-(hunting) dog hunters hunt. The grasslands will produce many birds in the bag, and many more, easily over a hundred pheasants may be seen getting up well out of shotgun range.

Not all will have the dog power to make for a great hunt. All with any dog will have a good hunt. That is if hunting to enjoy the dog. This discussion is what experience has shown to be true.

A slow hunting, long point standoff dog will produce an easy pheasant limit of points. This is the art of Kansas hunting. One hunter, one dog, four points, four shells fired, for roosters in the bag. That is a great Kansas hunting day. When it happens it is time for pictures and extra treats for the dog.

A fast dog or one with short standoff will generate a lot of wild flushes. This brings us to the second aspect of our self guided pheasant hunts. That is pheasant specific habitat type compared to dog power and upland bird hunting style. This combination makes any one cover/food combination more or less successful hunting than another. Kansas offers much of this variety. It is rare to be hunting only one type of cover in a single day.

How To Have More Great Hunts

What many find is that we will encourage a bit of a tour of our different Kansas pheasant hunting regions. What most find is that one habitat more suited to their hunting style and dog power. It may open opportunity to better hunts through finding that combination that works better.

The Hunt Is Not About The Number Of Dead Birds

Our hunts are all about the enjoyment of the hunt, dogs, friends and family. Those that count success only in terms of bag limits should seek their hunts elsewhere than with us.

Hi John,
Pictures of my boys, Mike & Kyle with just the pheasant they shot and also Mikey with his first buck. I grunted two in to 20 yards...a six point with a much bigger rack, but it was a much smaller deer. He will never shoot one better. The first one always is so special. I know it was special for me watching him. My oldest took that 8 point we saw in September...scored 132. Will be taking him this weekend for a doe...we don't get out much together, because he plays three sports (basketball right now)...will be nice to be out in the snow. From here on out it will be all pheasant/geese.
Have a great Christmas! Steve

The next season.

private land huntingJohn,
Again...hats off to you and the staff at MAHA. Had a great time chasing roosters...and I do mean chasing...with my two boys this Kansas opener. We did not see as many birds as last year, but there is still an abundance of standing crops and the cover is not as abundant or thick as last year. Enclosed are four pictures. My oldest boy joined us on Sunday and he continues to shoot straight given his limited field opportunities due to sports. The picture of Mike says it all...a true double off of our dog, Griz. Both roosters flushed simultaneously and Mike put them down with his 20 gauge Benelli pump. Dad couldn't have been prouder!!!! Another great family day on MAHA land!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
