Who We Are

Mid-America Hunting Association has existed since 1965 providing wild quail Kansas quail hunting from its first day of existence.

This is a self guided hunting organization. It is for those that enjoy hunting their own dogs seeking.

We have been hunting quail in Kansas for a long time well before aluminum dog boxes and beeper collars. The Kansas hunting picture below is from many years ago.

Wild quail hunts on private Kansas hunting land has changed much over the years. Our ability to provide good Kansas hunting has stayed the same.

While the hunters are not pictured in the top picture and the dogs are different both pictures are from the same Kansas hunters more than 32 hunting seasons apart.

What Kansas Hunting We Provide

We secure private hunting land within Kansas' grain farming regions where the better Bobwhite Quail numbers are found. Within these regions the collective buying power of the Association allows purchase of large corporate Kansas farming operation of hunting land well into the thousands of acres. That payback to the Association hunter is that these corporate farms are commodity specific operations with our concentration on grain farms. This brings a higher hunting quality wildlife protective cover per acre not in grain crops. This may be contrasted by the small acreage Kansas family farm that is likely to be diversified with livestock on the farmer categorized non-plowed waste land or as we identify it as Kansas hunting land.

The two Association partners, Jon Nee and John Wenzel, are both quail hunters and out on the Kansas hunting land year round conducting Association business. They have direct observation knowledge where the Kansas better quail densities will be found season to season. That is the knowledge they share with Association hunters to insure the best quail hunts possible.

Benefits To The Kansas Hunter

A greater sense of tranquility is secured through the hunter always having a place to go hunting. More Kansas hunting land to hunt than daylight hours to cover and the coveys are there. Most gain a satisfaction they have hunted enough at the conclusion of each hunting day, trip and season.

This organization exists foremost for those that want to watch their hunting dogs on quail action. To support this is our structure as strictly a during the Kansas hunting season quail hunt execution organization only. We do not allow any pre-season dog on the land presence. No field trials. No commercial dog training, commercial for video or dog sales activities. This Association is for the individual, small friendship or family group hunters with the pure motivation of having a good Kansas wild quail private land hunting experience.

How It Works

Not all hunters are welcome.

For those that may be interested in securing an Association membership we first will have a telephone conversation for two points.

The first is to insure there is a clear understanding of how this hunting Association operates and for whom it exists to serve. This will be a check to see if the hunter and the Association are a good fit for each of the other.

Second, this initial conversation serves well for those allocated a membership to insure there will not be any surprise on their behalf later.

If allocated a membership that hunter will gain access to an online Kansas hunting land map library of all Association land. All Kansas upland bird hunting lands are grouped into "Units" of hunting land. They will cover both Kansas pheasant and quail localities. In telephone conversation with one of the Association partners using these hunting land maps as a common reference that hunter will be recommended to the better Kansas regions as determined by reproduction and year round survival success. The maps then get that hunter to the point of where to park his truck, step out and begin hunting. From that point on the hunter makes the rest of his Kansas hunting time as he sees fit.

The Down Side - No Hunting Is As easy As Seen In Videos

Kansas wild Bobwhite Quail hunts are this Association's highest risk hunting in terms of the potential for failure.

Some of the situations we have repetitive experienced with over the years:

#1 A successful upland bird hunter of any bird native to his home state such as Ruffed Grouse reads the many Kansas hunting articles promoting the romantic appeal of wild quail. Bobwhite in particular for the intensity of the dog on bird action. The operating assumption leading to a failed Kansas wild Bobwhite Quail experience is that hunter believing his dog will automatically be a good quail dog. That frequently is not the case.

Bobwhite Quail are protective cover specialists occupying a very narrow range of cover. A grouse dog given to widely variable circle patterns around its master while on a hunt will frequently be too far into or out of the narrow range edge the quail occupy. This will easily lead to by-passed coveys.

#2 A hunting dog that did well in training on pen raised quail does not live up to expectations on wild quail.

The difference comes down to finding wild less scent coveys on natural Kansas terrain rather than a training field of pen raised scent heavy birds. Two different dog skill sets entirely.

#3 Thirty to a 100 quail were seen in a day and it was a bad hunt.

Typical to this is the discovery that Bobwhite Quail that hold so well for great dog work are ground loving birds. They give about 2 seconds of flight time before returning to ground. Tougher shooting than on any skeet or sporting clays range.

#4 Anything less than the 25 coveys a day like we had in Texas is poor hunting not worth the trip to Kansas.

The covey hunting only states require such covey numbers for a good day's worth of hunting. However, in Kansas the more humid, cooler temperatures, allows us to hunt but do not shoot into coveys. This is due to that hunting singles is part of every covey. Our hunting for shot is on singles immediately and long after the covey flush.

To shoot into a covey is to wound as many as to bag one. This is given the open chokes of most quail guns and the tight patterns of the covey on the rise. This is often the reason we politely decline membership application by the overly aggressive hunter.

The hunting of singles after the covey flush is to get the dog on many more points. To compare this approach to a covey hunt only state say in Kansas on a five covey day of relaxed hunting an average of 8 singles points are gained. That is 40 points. More than plenty even with a greater than 50% miss rate to bag a limit.

#5 The final one is that Kansas' hunting is simply bad. Meaning no birds, due to every reason other than the hunter or the dog. We will get this from a first year Association hunter on his first Kansas upland bird hunting trip. This has been true even on the years of top 10% forecasts.

There is more good Kansas hunting than bad. There are more good hunters than bad. It will always be true that Kansas wild quail hunters will be a minority as they have been in the past. It will remain true that a quail bag limit is as challenging as a trophy whitetail hunt.

Don is primarily a Kansas hunter. It is common for any one upland bird hunter to find one region or another more suited to his dog power and hunting style. For Don that is Kansas, for others Missouri is the only place to run their dogs.

A Kansas cut milo field. Plenty of leaf for cover. The key part is just how little cover it takes when the right food is present. This shows well the idea that in Kansas every milo field regardless of any human evaluation of hunting cover quality should be hunted.
