Private Iowa Hunting Land for Self Guided Hunts

This article assumes the reader is familiar with Mid-America Hunting Association and how it operates as a private land self guided hunter organization. If not please read our organization overview.

Iowa hunting is contained within the Grand River watershed of south central Iowa. This is grain farming country of soybean and corn. The watershed creates low rolling terrain cut by wet and dry drainage's connecting wood patches, brush and grass.

Our Iowa land map shows the 2011 available acreage.

Our approach is simple. one annual cost to access all this Iowa land for the entire season. No one can hunt it all and our telephone reservation system will prevent overlap.

This region is well suited for deer and turkey every year. Pheasant and quail however are more weather dependent.

The short description the Association Iowa land value to the self guided hunter is presented below. Links to more complete discussion follow each of the introductions.

Iowa Deer Hunting in Nonresident Zones 4 and 5

Iowa deer hunting success comes form our approach that no one hunter is limited to just one spot. Each may scout as much land as he has time to develop. Most will scout between 2,000 and 4,000 acres of land in a short time. Within that acreage most deer hunters will have 3 to 5 spots they would consider first choice, typically hunting 2 to 3 hard within a week's hunt. Each may chose from day to day of where to hunt. This approach develops a greater range of opportunity to get on a good buck. Opposed to this would be a single deer lease where that lease hunter would have no options of where to hunt other than that one hunting lease.

With Iowa deer tag draw as restrictive as it is we offer further flexibility. For those years not drawing a deer tag we have deer hunting land available in Kansas and Missouri. Many of the Association deer hunters hunt two of our three states each season. It is common to rotate between a Missouri and Iowa season one year then the next year to a Kansas and Missouri hunt.

Our costs and operation is set for the average hunter seeking a good day in field. There are trophy whitetail to be seen, however we do not promote trophy deer hunts. Our deer hunts are to enjoy the quality of the hunt. That quality is expressed in flexibility of time as all may hunt any time during the season. It is also expressed in flexibility of location as all may pick and chose where to hunt from day to day.

That is the short answer of why to dig further into our Iowa deer hunting.

Iowa Turkey Hunting (nonresident zone 4)

Really not much of an advantage is brought from our Iowa turkey hunting other than a purpose to combine with a spring deer scouting and turkey hunt.

Those that do turkey hunt typically do so in combination with the more liberal seasons and tags in Kansas and Missouri. It is possible and is done each spring by a fair number of turkey hunters to fill all five available spring turkey tags. Most however do not. Many are satisfied with one tom and spend the rest of the time deer scouting.

turkey

Turkey hunts for those that want to enjoy the hunt as they set the hunt to be. We make the private land available to the self guided hunter. How he hunts from that point on is his to make.

Separate regulations cover resident and non-resident turkey hunting.

Iowa Pheasant Hunting One More Option

Pheasant hunts for those that want to hunt their own dog without mixing them with others.

Iowa pheasant hunting is a well known upland bird location that does suffer or benefit pheasanteach year as do all other ground dwelling bird locations from environmental effects making for up and down pheasant years. In the case of this Association covering southern Iowa, northern Missouri and out to western Kansas pheasant and quail distribution zone we have good bird hunting somewhere, but not every where each season. On those years that Iowa pheasant hunting is on the decline it is common for Kansas pheasant hunting to be very good. Likewise in the other direction on some years.

Having this choice of where to hunt each season allows for all bird dog hunters to enjoy each season returning to favored spots as well as exploring new ground. Add to this our mild central midwest weather and we hunt through the end of January. Without deep snow, cactus or snakes makes for a more enjoyable day in the field.

The upland bird hunter seeking both a quail and a pheasant hunt will find our Iowa pheasant hunting about as good to be found anywhere in Iowa.

Iowa Wild Bobwhite Quail Mixed Bag Pheasant Hunt

Quail hunting has been well known in Missouri and Kansas for a long time. Iowa quail hunting is limited to that southern region of Iowa meeting up against the Missouri State line. Much edge protective cover boarding large grain fields of corn and soybean in this good soil and rainfall region that makes for sustainable coveys. Most that hunt Iowa quail find it as good or better than that of Missouri or Kansas on select years when year round weather allows. On the year that Iowa is having a down trend on quail there will be better quail hunting in Missouri or Kansas.

many that quail hunt our way find our more humid, cooler temperatures allowing for singles points after the covey flush. many that travel in from arid quail hunting states find for the fist time an easier hunt free of cactus and snakes. The chance to singles hunt a bonus making for a lot more dog on bird action.

Private land self guided hunts

On whole when in Iowa on a pheasant hunt in our southern Iowa lands all will also be quail hunting as the two do overlap.

Iowa hunting for duck and goose not as good as we have elsewhere.

Waterfowl hunts are largely limited to field sets. Mostly for late and spring goose. Our Missouri waterfowl is far superior to any of that found in Iowa.
